Omaha Community Playhouse presents  Intimate Apparel directed by Susan Baer Collins beginning on 8/22/2008 and running through 9/21/2008.
Esther is an unmarried African-American seamstress making her living in a New York City boarding house at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Her specialty is creating elegant, finely-detailed lingerie for a clientele that ranges from an unhappy, childless New York socialite to a musically gifted prostitute from the Tenderloin district. As she faces her 35th birthday, Esther asks the question, “Do you think there’s something wrong with a woman alone?” Rejecting her landlady’s well-meaning attempts at matchmaking, Esther finds herself inappropriately attracted to an Orthodox Jewish fabric merchant, with whom she seems to have much in common. The arrival of an intriguing letter from an immigrant man working on the Panama Canal prompts Esther to engage in a romantic exchange of letters with him, which ends in a marriage proposal. After she meets him in person, however, she comes to realize he is not the same person who wrote the impassioned thoughts in the letters he sent her. Esther’s dreams and her desire for true intimacy collide in this moving, character-driven drama. Susan Baer Collins directs, with Deborah Conley assisting. Stage manager is Jeanne Shelton. The cast includes Julie Adams, Denise Chapman, Derrick Crawford, Kirstin Kluver, Lanette Metoyer Moore, and Chris Shonka.
