It’s not what you think.

“Cock,” the latest offering by SNAP! Productions, is a very racy title for an entirely new spin on a fairly conventional story: a love triangle. John has been in a comfortable, if not particularly healthy, relationship with his boyfriend for years. During a short break in their relationship, John meets a woman, has a fling (his first with someone of the opposite sex), and suddenly begins to question who, and what, he is.

The title of the play does not refer to . . . well, you know. Rather, it is a reference to the no holds barred cockfight between his two lovers as John, and the audience, look on.

The play, by Mike Bartlett, premiered in Liverpool in 2009. It won the 2010 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement In An Affiliate Theatre, and it has become a hot script on both sides of the pond ever since. According to director Josh Mullady, the script contains no stage directions at all. “It’s a blank canvas and you can interpret it any way you want.” For this production, SNAP! has reconfigured the seating, placing the audience on both sides of a minimalist set. The audience hovers over the action, just as a crowd would watch a cockfight. “The story becomes a series of high stakes scenes of two people fighting for what they really want,” says Mullady. In an already intimate space, this may be the most integrated the audience has been to the action since SNAP’s TAG Award winning production of Cabaret in 2004.

The cast of four includes SNAP! veterans Eric Grant-Leanna and Brent Spencer and introduces two talented newcomers to the SNAP! stage: Joseph Schoborg and Caitlin Staebell.

The script is funny and smart, with stripped down, realistic dialogue and a unique discussion of identity and sexuality that will leave you guessing until the very end of the play. And perhaps even beyond that.

SNAP! Production’s production of “Cock” will run from March 4 through March 27. Curtain is 8 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Curtain on Sunday nights is 6 pm except for a closing Sunday matinee time of 2 pm. There will be a TAG Night Out on Thursday, March 3. The house opens thirty minutes before curtain. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students, seniors and TAG members. Thursday shows are a steal at only $10.
